The Republic of Serbia and Russian Railways plan to broaden cooperation
Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of JSC "Russian Railways" Oleg Belozerov paid a working visit to Serbia.

Head of the Russian Railways held a meeting with the President of the Republic of Serbia Alexandar Vucic and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia Zorana Mihajlovic. 

The parties discussed the prospects of making a new contract for reconstruction of the 210 km long Valjevo – Vrbnica – frontier with Montenegro railway section, and construction of the Integrated Railway Traffic Control Center in the Republic of Serbia. One more topic to discuss was joint maintenance service of the Serbian railway infrastructure.

The status of the current projects also appeared on the agenda of the meetings. Serbian party pointed out the high quality of works, conducted in full compliance with the schedule. To date the Company completed the first 10 km of railway track on the Stara Pazova ¬– Indjia section of the Belgrade – Budapest railway line for the speed of 200 km/h. Despite the complicated technical conditions, the construction of the double-track Chortanovci tunnel and the viaduct in the floodplain of the Danube river on the Stara Pazova – Novi Sad section is also conducted in accordance with the schedule. The parties stressed that these objects are of great strategic importance for the Serbian railway infrastructure development and totally unique to the country because of their size and engineering solutions applied during designing and construction stages.

The parties confirmed mutual interest in extension of Russian involvement in construction and modernization of railway infrastructure of the Republic of Serbia. Oleg Belozerov pointed out that the Russian Railways Holding is ready to significantly increase cooperation through the new projects in Serbia and the third countries as well.

As he said during the briefing after the talks: "Russian and Serbian railway specialists demonstrate the coherent teamwork. We are ready to work even faster; I'm sure that if we join our efforts we will be able to pull off the projects of any difficulty level".

Background

Since 2014 RZD International, a part of the Russian Railways holding, has been carrying out extensive works on constructing and upgrading Serbian railway infrastructure.

To date, the Company has already finished reconstruction of the Belgrade-Pancevo section, railway facilities within the Trans-European Transport Corridor X development project and Resnik – Valjevo section on the Belgrade – Bar railway line. Also, Russian-made Diesel Multiple Unit trains (DMU) were delivered to Serbia. 

The Company is currently working on construction of the unique to Serbia railway facilities – Cortanovci tunnel and 3 km-long viaduct in a floodplain of the Danube river on the Stara Pazova – Novi Sad section of the Belgrad – Budapest railway line.  In addition, the reconstruction of the existing and construction of the new double-track railway for the speed of 200 km/h is under way there. 

In March 2018, JSC Russian Railways and the Government of Serbia signed the Memorandum of strategic partnership development and joined implementation of the railway infrastructure projects in the Republic of Serbia.

The document sets the basic aspects of cooperation development in the railway transport area and joint implementation of the railway infrastructure projects with Russian Railways represented by the specialized company "RZD International". The parties decided to develop partnership in the fields of maintenance of railway infrastructure, upgrading and construction of the new tracks, experience and technology exchange and joint educational programs. In addition, they agreed on mutual professional support and expert group meetings in case of emergencies
